3D for Accessibility

Project Wings to Dreams

Introduction

Project Wings to Dreams is an initiative by Chain For Change in collaboration with Expedición Solidaria, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, and St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, Kathmandu to solve the graphical challenges faced by persons with visual disabilities in their academic and daily lives using 3D and tactile technology.

The accessible 3D models we create not only serve those with visual disabilities but also benefit all individuals, creating an inclusive environment. Many researches and practices by different governments and organizations from Australia, USA, and China substantiate this idea of Accessibility and Inclusion. This is why we aim to create an Accessible, Beautiful, and Inclusive world with this project and need your support in any way possible.

Goals:

  • To integrate 3D/tactile printing with braille labeling, audio description, and other accessible mediums for all possible diagrams and graphical content in academic courses for persons with visual disabilities.
  • To establish ‘maqueta’ in all possible touristic and public structures along with accessible descriptions so that understanding and navigation of such places for persons with visual disabilities become accessible.

Wings to Dreams (सपनाहरु को पखेटा)

Wings to Dreams (सपनाहरु को पखेटा) is the new documentary by Chain For Change, continuing the journey started with Wings of Consciousness. The film highlights Project Wings to Dreams, an initiative by Chain For Change in collaboration with Expedición Solidaria, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, and St. Xavier's College, Maitighar. Through accessible 3D models, tactile learning tools, and innovative in-door navigation, the documentary reveals how small but meaningful interventions can open doors to independence, confidence, and equal participation for individuals with visual disabilities. It also tells the heartfelt success stories of children, families, teachers, interns, partners, and CFC as a whole who have joined hands in this mission. Watch the full documentary:

  • Resource Centre for Accessible Facilities

An initiation by Chain For Change - CFC in collaboration with Expedición Solidaria, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain and St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, Kathmandu under the project "Wings to Dreams". Establishing Resource Centre for Accessible Facilities and integrating it in education system is CFC's mega project to overcome the graphical challenges faced by persons with visual disabilities. There are subjects in curriculum having diagram and graphical content which are understood only through visual cues or perception. This causes more than 90% of the published materials in the world inaccessible to persons with visual disabilities states World Blind Union. This is why, we need your attention and support in any way possible. Chain For Change has received the 3D printer with the support from Expedición Solidaria and has inaugurated the Resource Centre for Accessible Facilities at St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, Kathmandu on 17th March, 2023. • Inclusive Dance Workshop - 2024

On 13th September, 2024 - Friday, Chain For Chane conducted an Inclusive Dance Workshop for project members of first and second batches of Project Wings to Dreams. The workshop was facilitated by two of the project members Garima Shakya and Aachal Bhatta. They choreographed a song where duos danced. The special thing about this workshop was one of the partner was blindfolded and the other was not. The partner of blindfolded pair had to teach the steps as according to the beat. All the project members celebrated and enjoyed the session. They also got to see the world in a new prospective after the completion of this workshop.
  • Installation of Accessible Signboards & Braille Labels in Lift at St. Xavier's College

On September 1, 2024 - Sunday, Chain For Change - CFC has completed installing braille labeling at the lift to indicate the buttons and 6 accessible signboards at St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, Kathmandu as a part of making this institution accessible and inclusive. Installation of 6 Accessible Sign Boards in St. Xavier's College, Maitighar for In-door Navigation We have installed 6 accessible sign boards in different parts of our college that would indicate Female and Male Toilets, Lift, Stairs, Canteen and Resource Center for Accessible Facilities. These sign boards contains braille and QR code that would give guided audio description for in-door navigation to persons with visual disabilities. One can scan the QR code by using our QR scanner of Chain For Change app or camera of the mobile phone to get guided description to any of the 6 location mentioned in the accessible signboards installed at the college. We are testing the efficacy of the accessible signboards and as we advan

  • Workshop on Designing an Accessible 3D Model & In-door Games - 2025

On 5th September 2025, members of the non-computer team from Project Wings to Dreams participated in a workshop facilitated by our Founder and President, Mr. Abhishek Shahi. The session focused on the challenges and benefits of developing 3D models and explored different measures to make them accessible for all. Mr. Shahi, who recently completed his thesis on "3D and Tactile as Teaching Learning Tools: A Visual Disability Education in Nepal", shared valuable insights from his research. His work highlights how 3D and tactile models can help overcome graphical barriers in inclusive education for students with visual disabilities. The objectives of his study were to identify both the benefits and challenges of using 3D and tactile models, and to explore practical solutions for making these resources more widely accessible. He explained that accessible 3D models can be created using different methods—such as resin and filament 3D printers, or even simple, locally available materials li
  • 3D Design & Printing Class for Computer Team - 2025

Chain For Change, in collaboration with St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, Expedición Solidaria, and Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain), has launched a 3D design, printing, and maintenance training program under Project Wings to Dreams: 3D for Accessibility. The training began on 27th July 2025 and is designed for new project members (2025/26) and staff of St. Xavier's College. In the first sessions, participants were introduced to Blender software, 3D printers (filament and resin), slicer tools, and interface basics under the guidance of Supreme Khadka and Rochak Khatiwada. They later advanced to hands-on modeling with facilitators Rayan Karki and Garima Shakya, practicing core techniques like Extrude, Inset, and Loop Cut by creating simple models such as cups, dustbins, and honeycomb patterns. By mid-August, learners explored more advanced features including Modifiers, Bezier curves, smooth shading, and SVG extrusion, applying their skills to accessible models like LEGO bl
