Guiding Techniques & Mobility Skills Training - 2026

In May, 2026, Chain For Change - CFC conducted the 5th Season of its signature project, "Guiding Techniques and Mobility Skills Training and Inclusive Hiking." This event is an initiative by Chain For Change in collaboration with Expedición Solidaria, St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, Laboratory Secondary School, Kirtipur, Access Nepal Tours & Treks, and EWE Consortium.

On 8th May, 2026, the first day of training was conducted at Laboratory Secondary School, Kirtipur for students with visual disabilities and project participants. On 10th May, 2026, the participants took part in an inclusive hike from Changunarayan to Nagarkot, where they put their newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice.

During the training, participants learned different guiding techniques to safely support individuals with visual disabilities in both indoor and outdoor settings, including hiking routes. They were also introduced to disability-friendly behaviors and effective communication skills to ensure that persons with visual disabilities could participate confidently and safely in outdoor activities.

During the inclusive hike from Changunarayan to Nagarkot, participants applied the techniques learned during the training. Students with visual disabilities practiced walking independently with and without using a white cane, learned mobility techniques suitable for hiking trails, and strengthened their indoor and outdoor navigation skills in a real-life environment. At the same time, their sighted partners practiced guiding techniques throughout the hiking route, promoting teamwork, confidence and inclusion.

Through Season 5 of this initiative, participants gained practical experience that extended beyond the classroom, demonstrating how appropriate mobility skills, guiding techniques and inclusive practices can enable persons with visual disabilities to actively participate in hiking and outdoor recreation alongside their peers.
