3D for Accessibility

Workshop on Designing an Accessible 3D Model & In-door Games - 2025

On 5th September 2025, members of the non-computer team from Project Wings to Dreams participated in a workshop facilitated by our Founder and President, Mr. Abhishek Shahi. The session focused on the challenges and benefits of developing 3D models and explored different measures to make them accessible for all.

Mr. Shahi, who recently completed his thesis on "3D and Tactile as Teaching Learning Tools: A Visual Disability Education in Nepal", shared valuable insights from his research. His work highlights how 3D and tactile models can help overcome graphical barriers in inclusive education for students with visual disabilities. The objectives of his study were to identify both the benefits and challenges of using 3D and tactile models, and to explore practical solutions for making these resources more widely accessible.

He explained that accessible 3D models can be created using different methods—such as resin and filament 3D printers, or even simple, locally available materials like stationery items, toothpicks, clay, cardboard, and wires. Mr. Shahi is leading the Project Wings to Dreams team who has been developing a wide range of accessible resources, including educational materials, assistive devices, maquetas (miniature 3D models of public or touristic spaces), tactile maps, and accessible signboards.

Adding to the workshop, Ms. Inés Martínez Gabarda, Intern Design Instructor (2025/26) at Chain For Change and an exchange student from Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain, engaged with participants in a creative discussion. She guided the team on designing accessible indoor games tailored for students with visual disabilities. Some of the ideas included classic games like Battleship, Snakes and Ladders, Ludo, Bagh Chal, and interactive word games or puzzles, all adapted into tactile formats to ensure inclusivity.

The workshop not only deepened participants' understanding of accessible 3D models but also inspired them to think innovatively about inclusive play and learning. It marked another step in Chain For Change's commitment to breaking barriers and fostering creativity for a more accessible world.
